At several points throughout your career you¡¯ll be given opportunities to choose stat,
resist, and other bonuses. These are level traits. You will receive the following options.

14 resist increase
22 power or health % increase or regeneration
28 stat increase
36 resist increase
42 power or health % increase or regeneration
46 stat increase
48 resist increase
For stat bonuses I took strength or stamina increases and chose to increase mental resist
whenever possible (on the grounds that being feared and charmed are probably the most
unpredictable things that could happen to me in any combat situation). Resists in
particular tend to fluctuate quite a lot as you acquire new equipment, and can be buffed
easily so it¡¯s not an especially crucial choice.
Increased health, power, or regeneration is perhaps the most difficult choice to make, as
good arguments can be made for the usefulness of all four traits. The regeneration traits
work in combat only, and they are cumulative, so you can pick the power regeneration
trait twice and they will both be in effect.
If given the opportunity to choose again, I would probably pick all strength for the stats,
crushing or mental resist, and all power regeneration for the others. If you decide to go
for weapon resists, bear in mind that most mobs do crushing damage.

At levels 12, 16, 24, 32, and 38 you will receive additional training options called Enemy Strikes. These give you an extra melee attack which you can use against certain creature types. Level Choices 12 Orc, Gnoll 16 Skeleton, Zombie, Ghost 24 Giant, Treant, Siren, Centaur 32 Bixie, Golem, Fairy, Goblin 38 Elemental, Nightblood, Shadowman, Lizardman 52 Djinn, Cyclops, Naga, Harpy 62 Aviak, Droag, Gazer, Ravasect Many of these are useful in some raid or other. For your first set both Orc and Gnoll are useful. There are both Orc and Gnoll raid mobs in the game, and both creatures are common XP mobs as well. I recommend Gnoll overall as the Splitpaw dungeons scale to your level (and there are level 50+ Splitpaw raid instances), whereas you cannot get good experience killing Orcs after level 40 or so (and there are no 50+ raids involving Orcs). For the second and third sets I recommend Skeleton and Giant respectively simply because both are very common mob types (much more so than the other choices in these sets) and there are raid mobs of both types in the game. Golems are much more common than any of the other choices in the fourth set for both raiding and grouping purposes, so I recommend choosing that option over the others. There is no clear-cut best option for the fifth choice. I went with Elemental, but Lizardman would be an equally good choice. Djinn is by far the most raid-friendly of the tier 6 choices and I went with Droag for tier 7, although all of the choices in that tier are useful for one or more raid encounters. In general though, I would say pick whatever you like. There is no telling what raid or group mobs will pop up in future expansions and there will not be endless opportunities to re-pick your choices. You never know, it might later prove worthwhile to pick a choice which doesn¡¯t seem important right now.

At levels 18, 26, 34, and 44, you are given the opportunity to pick one racial trait out of the
pool available to your race. Be aware that those which are described as augmentations
placed upon you are temporary spell effects which you can cast on yourself every 30
minutes, and these last only a few minutes. Whenever I possible I recommend choosing
traits that give you permanent bonuses rather than temporary spell effects. Remember
that both health and power regeneration from all traits is out of combat only (it¡¯s much
more useful to choose traits that add to your total health or power pool as regeneration out
of combat is very fast anyway as long as you¡¯re using good crafted drink).

Listed here are the important starting stats of each race. I have included strength, agility,
and stamina for comparison. Based on my own feelings about the importance of these
three stats, the Ogre and Troll are my ideal races for a scout! If you want to play one of
the evil races, you¡¯ll need to betray between levels 14-18 (you can find a complete
walkthrough for the betrayal quest in section 2.4 of this guide).

When creating your character you are able to customize its appearance fairly heavily.
This will not affect you in any way except in that each race starts with different stats.
These stats won¡¯t affect your character significantly when you are level 50 with level 50
gear, but as you¡¯re leveling up you may find those small stat additions helpful. In addition
each character is able to choose bonus traits every few levels, and the selection of bonus
traits you have to choose from is based on your race.
There¡¯s no need to worry too much about starting stats and bonus traits. It¡¯s not really
possible to choose the ¡°wrong¡± race for a scout class and I suggest you choose whatever
race you think you will enjoy playing and looking at. The same can be said of all the
customization options you will receive throughout your career as a ranger. Traits and
skills won¡¯t make or break your character, so don¡¯t worry about your choices ¨C while I will
make recommendations for many of these based on my own experiences, there is no real
¡°right¡± or ¡°wrong¡± choice for any trait and choosing what you¡¯ll have the most fun with is
always the best way to go.

As a ranger your primary stat is strength. It affects damage from both your combat
abilities and your auto-attack damage. Your secondary stat is agility. This affects your
power pool, avoidance, and to-hit chance (for auto-attack only). Opinion varies on the
relative importance of these two stats, but in general I put strength at a higher level of
importance for two reasons. The first is that it has a greater effect on damage than agility
does. The second is that the effects of agility are subject to greater restrictions than that
of strength.
I consider stamina to be as important as agility because as I have mentioned, I think that
survivability (i.e. stamina/health, not so much mitigation) is very important for a melee
DPS class. Stamina increases your hitpoint total and more hitpoints mean you can
survive more hits when you gain agro in a group, and it means you have a better chance
of surviving riposte and AE damage when you¡¯re raiding. I can¡¯t count the number of
times I¡¯ve seen scout guild-mates die to AEs or riposte damage during raids because
they¡¯ve concentrated on increasing DPS above everything else, and have forgotten that
when they¡¯re dead, they¡¯re not doing any damage. When I parse raids, I almost always
parse higher than other predators and this is partly because I stand a better chance of
survival when I am taking damage.
In general, my philosophy has been to increase strength and intelligence whenever I can
(as long as I don¡¯t lose a significant amount of hitpoints), and to increase stamina and
hitpoints as secondary considerations. I have not actively focused on increasing my
agility, but even so I find it easy to reach the cap.
Stats are capped at 7 x your level. Your stats can increase past this point but the benefits
of going past the cap are minimal at best.

As a ranger your main role in a group or raid is DPS, DPS, and more DPS. This means
you must make increasing your DPS the main focus when choosing new equipment and
spell upgrades. Upgrading spells and weapons should always be your number one
priority.
The second most important thing you must learn how to do is control your agro and
survive. As a high damage melee player you¡¯ll find you can generate a lot of agro even
during quite short fights. While doing large amounts of damage is your main focus, you
must place some importance on learning how to manage your agro so that the damage
you do doesn¡¯t end up getting you killed. While you¡¯re dead you¡¯re not doing any damage
so your secondary focus should be on learning how to avoid the attention of mobs when
you¡¯re in groups or raids (and how to deal with it when you do get it), and on upgrading
spells and equipment that increase your survivability.

The different types of Scout class are very different but do share a few similarities. The bards are high-utility, low-DPS scouts, with a wide array of buffs and abilities that make them shine in groups and raids. The rogues are a medium-utility, medium-DPS sub-type, with a lot of different types of debuffs as well as limited abilities to mez, stun, and taunt. ¨C 1 ¨C EverQuest 2 Ranger Guide The predators are the highest DPS of the scouts, with the least amount of utility. They have no group buffs beyond pathfinding and very little utility apart from the things that all scouts get ¨C evac, disarm, and safe fall. There are plenty of other interesting things that the predators can do with their skills though, which I¡¯ll talk about in the combat sections of the guide.

Rangers, along with their evil counterparts, the assassins, are the most damaging of the
melee DPS classes. Rangers are distinctly different in that they have the most range
attacks of any of the melee classes (including assassins), several of which are launched
from stealth. Rangers also have a very comprehensive line of attacks with snare and
debuff components, and in addition they are able to use poisons. Rangers are great fun
to play both solo and in groups, with a wide variety of tactics available to them. Their
highly effective sneak abilities, as well as pathfinding and evac, make them extremely
suitable for fast, safe traveling and solo questing. The high DPS of a well-played Ranger
make them a welcome addition in any group.
